Mount Somma ridges

Challenging hiking which leads to the bare ridges of Mount Somma. Between rocky outcrops and lush forests, it reaches “Cognoli”, the peaks of the mount, where you are rewarded by a unique landscape. From there, it continues along the ridge of Mount Somma, after which you descend along a steep stretch of lapilli and ash, up to the Valley of Hell, gliding like on sand dunes.

From The Valley of Hell till the Great Cone (*)

This is the ideal path to observe the typical geological structures of the volcanic complex. The Valley of Hell, indeed, separates the Monte Somma from Vesuvius cone, allowing to walk between the internal structures of the two volcanoes. Through the Valley, you can reach splendid panoramic clearings, caves and lava strings, before starting the ascent to the Great Cone from the Southeast side up to the crater edge.
